The Knives Out sequel was first screened in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, wowing most critics with its hilarious and carefully crafted brand of mystery. Judging from early reviews that came out this past week, Glass Onion looks to refine that formula. A Knives Out Mystery is the latest Netflix production to premiere under this release scheme, with Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio sticking to the same plan for November and December.

As for the actual murder case in Knives Out 2, Blanc will have his hands full this time. A new clip posted online by Netflix picked the dinner scene last seen in the trailer, where all the guests invited by billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) to his private island get the rundown on why exactly they’re all there. In the face of such an eccentric game, it’s up to Blanc to break the ice with the most obvious question possible. The clip promises audiences will have a blast when Glass Onion finally drops on streaming.

From this early look, it’s clear Blanc’s humor remains intact. However, the world-renowned detective’s game will have to be on point with an ensemble cast that’s even more numerous than in the first Knives Out. Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, and Madelyn Cline join Norton and Craig for dinner in this fashionable murder mystery.

Knives Out director and gamer Rian Johnson has said the entire cast had a lot of fun filming the sequel, whose mysterious Glass Onion title takes its name from a Beatles song he thought was perfect for this plot. Despite not getting as much time with Star Wars as he would have wanted, Johnson’s future with Knives Out is much brighter, as both he and Craig seem happy to continue working on a franchise that is on its way to hitting two for two.

Sure, the Thrombey family and Ana de Armas are gone, but this Knives Out entry looks like an absolute must-watch for these upcoming holidays.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will be available on Netflix starting December 23, 2022.
